Semiclassical calculation of the nucleation rate for first order phase transitions in the 2-dimensional φ 4-model beyond the thin wall approximation * G. Münster (a) and S.B. Rutkevich (b) Abstract In many systems in condensed matter physics and quantum field theory, first order phase transitions are initiated by the nucleation of bubbles of the stable phase. Traditionally, this process is described by the semiclassical nucleation theory developed by Langer and, in the context of quantum field theory, by Callan and Coleman. They have shown that the nucleation rate Γ can be written in the form of the Ar-rhenius law: Γ = Ae −Hc. Here H c is the energy of the critical bubble, and the prefactor A can be expressed in terms of the determinant of the operator of fluctuations near the critical bubble state. It is not possible to find explicit expressions for the constants A and H c in the general case of a finite difference η between the energies of the stable and metastable vacua. For small η, the constant A can be determined within the leading approximation in η, which is an extension of the " thin wall approximation ". We have calculated the leading approximation of the prefactor for the case of a model with a real-valued order parameter field in two dimensions.

Bubble-Nucleation Rates for Radiatively Induced First-Order Phase Transitions

We present a consistent calculation of bubble-nucleation rates in theories of two scalar fields. Our approach is based on the notion of a coarse-grained free energy that incorporates the effects of fluctuations with momenta above a given scale k. We establish the reliability of the method for a variety of two-scalar models and confirm the conclusions of previous studies in one-field theories: L...

The Exact Renormalization Group and First-order Phase Transitions

Studies of first-order phase transitions through the use of the exact renormalization group are reviewed. In the first part the emphasis is on universal aspects: We discuss the universal critical behaviour near weakly first-order phase transitions for a three-dimensional model of two coupled scalar fields – the cubic anisotropy model. In the second part we review the application of the exact re...

A consistent approach to bubble-nucleation theory

We summarize recent work on the consistent calculation of bubble-nucleation rates. Our approach is based on the notion of a real coarse-grained potential. The bubble-nucleation rate is calculated through an expansion around the semiclassical saddle point associated with tunnelling. We resolve outstanding problems related to the convexity of the potential, the double-counting of the effect of fl...

Analytical Calculation of the Nucleation Rate for First Order Phase Transitions beyond the Thin Wall Approximation

First order phase transitions in general proceed via nucleation of bubbles. A theoretical basis for the calculation of the nucleation rate is given by the homogeneous nucleation theory of Langer and its field theoretical version of Callan and Coleman. We have calculated the nucleation rate beyond the thin wall approximation by expanding the bubble solution and the fluctuation determinant in pow...
